Wetlands Comparison

Image

Illustration of the carbon cycle in general wetlands. Carbon dioxide flows into the system through vegetation depicted with an arrow, through the vegetation to particulate and dissolved organic carbon. The arrows then show the carbon becoming carbon dioxide in the soil or being stored as soil carbon. The soil carbon can produce methane through microbial activities, which releases carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. Methane can also come from vegetation roots.
